Turkey Day turn-up: Fun ways to keep kids moving
Turn Thanksgiving into a Day of Giggles, Wiggles, and Healthy Fun
NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 26 - Thanksgiving is a time for food, family, and festive fun but it can also be a long day of sitting and waiting for the feast. At BCHS, we know that a little movement keeps kids energized, happy, and ready to enjoy the day.
Here are playful ways to keep moving on Turkey Day:
- Morning Move and Groove
Start the day with a quick stretch, a mini dance party, or a family walk. Even 5–10 minutes of activity sets the tone for a fun, energetic day.
- Backyard or Living Room Games
Weather permitting, take the fun outside. Backyard turkey tag, mini obstacle courses, or a simple ball toss keep kids active while giving adults a cooking break.
If you’re indoors, try freeze dance, scavenger hunts, or hopscotch with masking tape or chalk. Kids don’t need a gym—they just need a chance to wiggle and giggle.
- Family Feast Walks
A gentle walk before or after mealtime supports digestion, boosts energy, and gives everyone a moment to reset. Bonus: it’s a tradition the whole family can enjoy.
- Kid-Friendly Kitchen Helpers
Even chores can count as movement! Let kids stir, set the table, carry napkins, or help clean up. They’ll feel included and burn some extra energy while learning responsibility.
- Make Movement Fun
The key is playful activity, not structured exercise. Encouraging little bursts of movement throughout the day helps children feel better, eat better, and enjoy the holiday without meltdowns or fuss.
A little planning goes a long way. This Thanksgiving, let your kids giggle, wiggle, and move while making memories. BCHS is here to support families in keeping the season safe, healthy, and full of joy.
