It's officially PINK MONTH!

October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, honor survivors, and remember those we’ve lost. At BCHS, we know that knowledge is power, and early detection is one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against breast cancer.

Why Early Detection Matters

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States -- about 1 in 8 women will get an invasive breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime (American Cancer Society). But here’s the hopeful news: when detected early, breast cancer is highly treatable. In fact, the 5-year survival rate for localized breast cancer (when it hasn't spread beyond the breast) is about 99% (American Cancer Society).

That’s why regular screenings and check-ups are so critical. They don’t just detect cancer -- they give women time, options, and the best possible chance at recovery.

At BCHS, we’re proud to offer basic women’s health services that can help detect issues early and keep you in control of your health. Our caring, professional team is here to support you with:

  • Breast exams

  • Pap smears

  • Birth control and family planning services

  • Comprehensive laboratory testing and analysis
  • Referrals for mammograms and other specialized screenings

Whether you're coming in for a routine check-up or have a specific concern, we treat every visit as an opportunity to support your overall well-being.

Don’t Put It Off

The American Cancer Society recommends the following for women at average risk for breast cancer:

  • Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start yearly breast cancer screening with a mammogram (x-ray of the breast) if they wish to do so.
  • Women ages 45 to 54 should get a mammogram every year.
  • Women 55 and older can switch to a mammogram every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening.

We understand that life gets busy, and sometimes your health can fall to the bottom of the list. But this month, we’re encouraging all women in our community to put themselves first -- even just for a check-up. A simple appointment could be lifesaving!

If cost or insurance is a concern, please reach out. We do not turn anyone away. We can help you access our critical services through financial assistance like Medicaid assistance or our income-based sliding scale options. Your health matters, and we’re here to help, no matter your situation!
